American YouTuber Jailed in South Korea for Public Nuisance

American livestreamer Ismael Ramsey Khalid, known online as Johnny Somali, received a six-month jail sentence in South Korea. The conviction stemmed from charges of public nuisance and distributing sexual deepfakes. Khalid had posted a video in November 2024 showing himself kissing and performing lap dances on a statue in Seoul, which commemorates women forced into sexual slavery by Japanese soldiers during World War Two.
These statues, often depicting a young woman seated, are installed by activists across South Korea to remember an estimated 200,000 "comfort women" from various Asian countries. Khalid, 25, has a history of creating provocative content, leading to bans from several streaming platforms and accusations of harassment during travels in Japan and Israel.
South Korean prosecutors had sought a three-year prison term, but the court issued a lower sentence, citing the "absence of severe harm to victims." The court noted Khalid "repeatedly committed crimes against unspecified members of the public to generate profit via YouTube and distributed the content in disregard of Korean law." He has also been barred from working with organizations serving minors and people with disabilities upon his release.
