Child Poisoned by Over-Concentrated Vitamin D Drops in UK

Roo, a seven-year-old, was prescribed high-dose vitamin D3 drops for leg pain. Over several weeks, he developed symptoms including extreme thirst, weight loss, and vomiting, leading to an acute kidney injury. His condition deteriorated to the point where doctors suspected a brain tumor due to dangerously high calcium levels in his blood.
The mystery was solved when a medical team discovered Roo's vitamin D drops were from a faulty batch, containing a concentration seven times higher than intended. These over-concentrated Aactive D3 supplements from TriOn Pharma were distributed across the UK and subsequently recalled by the Food Standards Agency. This incident raises questions about the oversight of vitamin supplements, which are currently regulated as food supplements rather than medicines, even at prescription-strength dosages.
