Liverpool Manager Critical of VAR Decisions After Penalty Overturn

During Tuesday's match against Paris St-Germain, Liverpool was initially awarded a penalty after Alexis Mac Allister went to ground following contact from PSG defender Willian Pacho. Referee Maurizio Mariani pointed to the spot, but the VAR, Marco di Bello, quickly intervened, sending Mariani to the pitchside monitor, leading to the decision being overturned. Five minutes after play resumed, PSG scored, securing a 2-0 victory on the night and a 4-0 aggregate win.
Manager Arne Slot stated he was "not surprised" by the decision, arguing that many similar incidents have gone against his team this season. He highlighted the inconsistency, noting that some "soft penalties" are given without VAR intervention, while others with clear contact are overturned. Slot referenced previous incidents, including a penalty conceded against Brentford and another awarded to Leeds United, to illustrate his point about the varying application of VAR rules.
Statistics show Liverpool, along with Brighton, has conceded three VAR-awarded penalties in the Premier League this season, more than any other team. They have also had six VAR interventions go against them, with only Fulham experiencing more. This pattern has led Slot to feel his team has been particularly disadvantaged by the system throughout the current season.
