Magyar calls for fast handover of power in talks with Hungary's president

Péter Magyar, who ended Viktor Orbán's 16 years in office, pushed for an early transfer of power during his talks with Hungary's president. Magyar's Tisza party swept the ruling Fidesz from power with a super-majority, three days prior to this meeting. He proposed the first meeting of the new National Assembly be held on May 4, the day official election results are anticipated, and expressed that President Sulyok is not fit to serve as a moral authority.
Magyar aims to overturn years of Orbán's policies, which critics termed an "electoral autocracy" due to issues of corruption and cronyism. He plans to reform state media, which he claims was controlled by Orbán's allies, to ensure press freedom. Magyar also engaged with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to unfreeze billions in EU funding that had been suspended over rule of law concerns, with an estimated €17bn currently frozen and an additional €16bn in defense loans awaiting approval.
