Nebraska police shoot knife-wielding woman who abducted child from Walmart

Police in Omaha, Nebraska, responded to a report of a child abduction at a local Walmart. Surveillance video showed the suspect, Noemi Guzman, shoplifting a knife before approaching a three-year-old boy and his babysitter. Guzman brandished the weapon, forcing the adult to walk ahead while the child remained in the shopping trolley. She directed them through the store and into the car park.
Upon arrival, officers confronted Guzman, who was reportedly wielding the knife at the child. Police body-worn camera footage showed her refusing commands to drop the weapon. She then cut the boy's cheek, prompting two officers to fire their weapons. Guzman was pronounced dead at the scene, and the child was transported to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators noted that Guzman had a history of mental illness. Police records indicate a woman with the same name was previously arrested for attempting to light a fire, injuring her father with a knife, and destroying property in a church. She was reportedly found not responsible by reason of insanity, with a judge ruling she suffered from schizophrenia and required court supervision. The boy's parents, Sara and Casey Hillman, expressed their relief and urged other parents to remain vigilant.
