Nebraska Police Shoot Woman After Child Abduction at Walmart

Noemi Guzman, 31, allegedly used a knife, reportedly shoplifted from the store, to abduct a three-year-old boy from a shopping cart. She forced the child's babysitter to walk ahead while moving the child through the store and into the parking lot, in what police described as an apparently random attack.

Body-worn camera footage showed Guzman wielding the knife at the child. Police stated she refused commands to drop the weapon and cut the boy's cheek before two officers fired. Guzman was pronounced dead at the scene, and the boy was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a hospital.

Police records indicate Guzman had a history of mental illness, including a prior arrest for attempting to light a fire and injuring her father with a knife, and destroying property in a church while armed. A judge had previously ruled her not responsible by reason of insanity due to schizophrenia.
