New UK Health Plan Launched as Women Report Still Being Ignored

The updated women's health strategy in England follows a 2022 plan that promised to "radically improve" how the health system engaged with women and girls. However, personal accounts like that of Zoe Trafford, who has endured severe endometriosis since her teenage years, highlight ongoing challenges. Trafford, who has undergone major surgery and faces continued complications, expressed feeling unheard despite the previous strategy. She described being caught in a "vicious circle" of referrals without resolution, leading her to give up her hairdressing career due to pain.Health Secretary Wes Streeting responded to these concerns, stating he accepted an "endemic problem" in tackling women's health issues within the NHS. He described a "culture of medical misogyny, sexism... both conscious and unconscious bias," which he believes is disproportionately worsening for women. Streeting emphasized the need for faster reductions in overall NHS waiting lists for women and improved access to services. BBC analysis indicates that gynaecological waiting lists in England have doubled between February 2020 and January 2026, now exceeding half a million patients. New measures include a "patient power payment" scheme for feedback, streamlined referrals, and a new standard of care for pain relief during invasive procedures.
