Snapchat owner cuts 1,000 jobs as says AI will reduce repetitive work

Snap's co-founder and CEO, Evan Spiegel, informed employees that the company is at a "crucible moment," emphasizing the need for a faster and more efficient "new way of working" focused on profitable growth. He noted that remaining employees will utilize AI tools to enhance productivity, a strategy already being implemented by "small squads" within the company. This marks at least the third significant layoff for Snap since 2022.
Spiegel's comments align with other tech executives who have recently attributed job cuts to the increased capabilities of AI technology, particularly in areas like software engineering. Major tech firms including Amazon, Meta, Block, Pinterest, and Atlassian have collectively laid off thousands of workers this year, often citing AI's role in reducing the need for certain positions or the substantial investment required for AI development. This trend impacts the broader California tech landscape, where many of these companies are headquartered.
