Son Admits Storing Mother's Body in Freezer

Christopher Phillips admitted to preventing the lawful and decent burial of his mother, Sylvia Phillips, whose body was found in a chest freezer at her Porthcawl home in February. Cardiff Crown Court heard that Sylvia Phillips, 89, died sometime in 2023. Phillips also admitted to two counts of fraud, specifically for failing to inform the Department for Work and Pensions and Bridgend council of his mother's death, thereby continuing to receive her benefits.
The discovery was made after Sylvia Phillips's general practitioner requested a welfare check by South Wales Police. An inquest revealed that a pathologist was unable to identify the cause of death, and further investigations are continuing. Phillips is scheduled for sentencing on June 2, with Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke noting the extreme seriousness of his admitted offenses.
