Starmer Says UK Will Not Yield to Trump Pressure on Iran War

Former US President Donald Trump recently told Sky News that the UK "were not there" when the US sought assistance in the conflict with Iran, which began in late February. Trump also suggested that the tariff agreement between the US and UK, established last year, "can always be changed." These comments follow his persistent criticism of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for refusing to join offensive measures in the US-Israel war against Iran.

Responding to questions in the Commons, Sir Keir Starmer affirmed his position, stating, "I'm not going to change my mind, I'm not going to yield, it is not in our national interest to join this war and we will not do so." The Prime Minister's spokesperson emphasized that the UK maintains a "close relationship" with the US across various levels, including trade, diplomacy, and national security, despite the recent strain. Chancellor Rachel Reeves also expressed frustration over the conflict, calling it a "mistake."

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revised its estimate for UK growth this year down to 0.8%, citing the UK's sensitivity as a net energy importer to rapid rises in energy prices since hostilities began. While Trump expressed a personal liking for Starmer, he criticized the UK government's immigration and energy policies. Despite the political tensions, a royal state visit by King Charles and Queen Camilla is still expected to proceed in late April.
