UK Primary Schools Offer Toilet-Training Guidance with Enrollment Letters

Teachers in England and Wales report a growing trend of children entering primary school reception classes without fundamental skills, such as being toilet-trained or possessing necessary communication abilities. This situation impacts teaching time, with a recent survey by the children's charity Kindred Squared indicating that reception staff spend an average of 1.4 hours daily changing nappies and lose over two hours of teaching time to basic skills. The UK government aims for 75% of children to achieve a good level of development by the time they complete reception. To address these challenges, a new government campaign is informing parents about key skills to practice at home before the autumn school term. As part of a pilot scheme, the City of York Council has proactively sent informational leaflets on potty-training to 1,700 families along with their school place offer letters. The council is also organizing parent workshops, providing special training for teachers and nursery staff, and distributing information in community locations. Jo Mould, a reception teacher with over 30 years of experience in York, views the target of having all children potty-trained by September as ambitious but achievable, emphasizing the positive impact on children's readiness to learn.
