US Blockades Iranian Ports in Strait of Hormuz Amidst Failed Peace Talks

The US intends to utilize its naval fleet to control access to Iranian ports, specifically targeting Iran's oil revenue and the tolls it previously demanded for passage through the Strait of Hormuz. This move follows a two-week ceasefire in a conflict that began on February 28, with US President Trump stating the goal is to allow "all or nothing" to pass through the crucial shipping channel. Iran has condemned the blockade as "piracy" and warned of potential retaliation against Gulf state ports.

The legality of the blockade under international law is contested. While the UN's International Maritime Organisation asserts no country has a legal right to block international transit straits, some international law experts argue that as a 'belligerent' in the conflict, the US can legitimately impose a blockade under the law of naval warfare. US Central Command (Centcom) has deployed over 12 warships and more than 100 fighter and surveillance aircraft for the operation. Satellite imagery indicates the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and other warships are positioned at the eastern edge of the Gulf of Oman, a key transit point for global oil.

US forces are expected to monitor ships leaving Iranian ports using intelligence and intercept them in the open Indian Ocean, avoiding close proximity to Iran's coast due to missile and drone risks. Centcom has confirmed that humanitarian shipments, including food and medical supplies, will be permitted passage after inspection. As of now, no confirmed interceptions or seizures of vessels by the US have been reported.
